【2743】里姆斯基 柯萨科夫   Goosens, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra (Guild, 1957) GH2376W  - Nikolay Andreyevich Rimsky Korsakov   Scheherazade Op 35   FLAC

When in February 1941 he made his first recordings with the Cincinnati Symphony, he had already been conducting for the gramophone for over twenty years (and for the National Gramophone Society he appeared on disc as a violinist and pianist); his vast experience is borne out by the stunning recording he conducted that month of Tchaikovsky’s Little Russian Symphony – arguably still the greatest performance ever committed to records. In 1947 he took up the twin posts of chief conductor of the newly-reconstituted Sydney Symphony Orchestra and director of the New South Wales Conservatorium of Music, bringing to music in Australia an unchallenged experience and dynamism. In 1956 he returned to London and the most significant part of his recording career began, with a series of outstanding recordings for EMI and other labels, including Pye and Everest, conducting the Philharmonia Orchestra and the two on this disc – the London Symphony and Royal Philharmonic orchestras – in purely orchestral repertoire as well as accompanying concertos. Goossens was one of very few conductors permitted to conduct the Royal Philharmonic on disc during Beecham’s lifetime. Again, his repertoire at these sessions was extensive, but Russian music was strongly featured, and by bringing together these two outstanding performances under his baton for the first time we can appreciate Goossens’s remarkable qualities as a conductor. His account of Pictures (made in 1957 for His Master’s Voice, in mono) is remarkably evocative in terms of atmosphere and (one of his greatest attributes) internal orchestral balance; in Scheherazade (recorded in 1959 for Everest in stereo) these qualities can be appreciated in larger structural contexts, a rare combination of power and sensitivity to which the London Symphony Orchestra respond admirably.
